>>9.14.08: BREAK (The Cinematics)
Artist: The Cinematics
Track: Break
Album: A Strange Education
Year: 2007
————
The Cinematics are another band from somewhere who got together and decided to make songs that sound like they were written in the ’80s. What makes them different from all the other bands who got together and decided to make songs that sound like they were written in the ’80s is that I really like them. To me, that’s important.

>>8.29.08: SHAME (The Motels)
Artist: The Motels
Track: Shame
Album: Shock
Year: 1985
————
Oh, how I love this song. On rainy nights like tonight, the first image that pops into my head is usually one of a circa-1985 John Cusak standing on a corner, soaked, broken-hearted, in his trenchcoat and Chuck Taylors. To my knowledge, ‘Shame’ never made it onto the soundtrack of any of his films, but it sure could have. It’s easy to hear from this track where artists like Gwen Stefani draw their inspiration. Hmmm… In fact, Gwen, if you’re reading this, please cover this song and put in on your next album, okay? Great. Thanks. If you like this, check out the Motels’ myspace page . As I was looking up this video, I discovered that they’re back together and just released a bunch of new material. Nice!

>>8.28.08: THROUGH AND THROUGH (L.O.A.)
Artist: Life of Agony
Track: Through and Through
Album: Life of Agony
Year: 1993
—–
People who don’t know me might be shocked to discover that I used to be quite the angry young man. You know, the angst-ridden, me-against-the-world, nobody-understands-me type. And even though I’m feeling much better now, there are a few things I still love from that chapter in my life. Like mosh pits. And all-ages shows. And Keith Caputo, another formerly-angry young man, who sings for Life of Agony. The name and the video say it all. The ’90s presented us with a LOT of crap music, but this stuff is priceless. Sometimes you just have to let it all out.

>>8.27.08: L.E.S. ARTISTS (Santogold)
Artist: Santogold
Track: L.E.S. Artists
Album: Santogold
Year: 2008
——-
I discovered Santogold this summer. Holy cow. I really don’t know anything about them. And I don’t know what planet this woman comes from, but I know that 1) I’m scared of her, and 2) I can’t stop listening to this stuff. This is an artist who just kicks a** and she knows it. That’s all I have to say. You HAVE to get her (their?) album.

>>8.26.08: STRANGE OVERTONES (DB)
Artist: David Byrne and Brian Eno
Track: Strange Overtones
Album: Everything That Happens . . .
Year: 2008
——-
This is the single from the new album by David Byrne and Brian Eno. I write this assuming you’re a David Byrne/Talking Heads fanatic like me. Am I right? Good. Thought so. I was very, very excited for this to be released; and as is always the case with David Byrne’s material, I had no idea what to expect. This track is a fairly accurate representation of the overall mood of the album. Most tracks feel a little somber, slightly detached. But it all flows together effortlessly– sweet, richly textured, with just enough groove. If you aren’t familiar with DB’s work, I think it’s a safe bet that if you like Beck’s albums ‘Sea Change’ or ‘Modern Guilt’, you’ll probably dig this. Enjoy.
